In his latest release “Buggy My Boo,” Amsterdam-based artist Flawlesz incorporates a clever sample from Destiny’s Child’s iconic hit “Bug-A-Boo.” Flawlesz seamlessly weaves elements of the 90s R&B classic into his modern basement thumper, creating a nostalgic yet fresh energy that resonates with listeners.
We had the opportunity to catch up with Flawlesz and chat about his latest release and what’s been going on in his world.
WHAT INSPIRED “BUGGY MY BOO”?
The idea for ‘Buggy My Boo’ began to take shape during my solo holiday trip to Egypt in September 2023. Surrounded by the inspiring landscapes and rich culture of Egypt, I found myself immersed in creative energy, laying down ideas for the groove. Drawing inspiration from the bassline style of my previous track, ‘Party Naughty ft. Noporius,’ released at OVRDOSE Records, I sought to infuse it with a touch of nostalgia. Inspired by the iconic Destiny’s Child song ‘Bug A Boo,’ I aimed to pay homage to its prominent elements while injecting a modern energy. To achieve this, I integrated multiple samples and vocal pieces from the original, processing them in my own style and vision within the track.
ARE THERE ANY NEW INFLUENCES THAT SHAPED THIS RECORD?
During the creation of ‘Buggy My Boo,’ I drew inspiration from a diverse range of musical influences, including my upbringing with tracks like ‘Bug A Boo’ by Destiny’s Child. Additionally, I explored various contemporary sounds and production techniques to create a fusion of nostalgic elements with a modern twist. This exploration allowed me to push the boundaries of my creativity and develop a track that resonates with both longtime fans and new listeners.
WAS THERE A SPECIFIC MOMENT OR EXPERIENCE THAT INSPIRED THIS TRACK?
The inspiration for ‘Buggy My Boo’ struck during my holiday in Egypt, where I found myself immersed in the vibrant energy of the country. Surrounded by the high sun and sipping hibiscus tea, I crafted the initial ideas for the track. A pivotal moment occurred when I shared a preview of the track with my friend Menesix over a call while I was still in Egypt. His immediate excitement and valuable feedback propelled the project forward, infusing it with fresh perspectives and ideas. This collaborative process fueled my creativity, and upon my return to Amsterdam, I swiftly completed the track in the studio.
HAVE ANY DJS BEEN PLAYING THIS TRACK OUT?
Yes, ‘Buggy My Boo’ has been gaining momentum in the DJ community, with numerous requests for the track. Prior to its official release, I kept it exclusive, only sharing it with Menesix, who played a pivotal role in its completion. Together, we tested the track at prominent venues such as Give Soul Festival and Thuishaven, garnering positive reactions from the audience.
WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR JOURNEY AFTER THIS RELEASE?
Playing more events! I’m already making my debut at Thuishaven Amsterdam, which is a location I’ve dreamed of playing at for years. Furthermore, I have some really cool gigs coming up at renowned venues in The Netherlands. Following the release of ‘Buggy My Boo,’ I’m excited to continue exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of my artistry. I have several projects in the works, including collaborations with other artists and potential remixes. Additionally, I’m considering the release of an EP or album later this year. I’m eager to connect with fans through live performances and digital platforms, sharing my music and engaging with audiences in meaningful ways.
